Ugh. So I did something dumb last week. An asphalt paving company was "hunting" in our area, and did a job for a neighbor down the road. When they got done, they gave me a pitch about having leftover asphalt and wanted to know if I wanted an overlay done.
We've had a big 2x12 strip of pavement missing since we had to cut it out for a septic project three years ago. It gets really bad in the winter time, and finally I put some old bricks in it to soften the blow. The bricks helped, but look really bad.
While the rest of our driveway was starting to look rough and needed to be resurfaced, the hole was what was bothering me the most. A lot of fast talking and a little bit of strong arming later, and we had our entire driveway resurfaced.
A totally unplanned $14k later, I've totally stopped all my discretionary savings, college fund contributions, and have been packing along drinks when we go to town, to avoid spending money. I am really feeling the pinch.
It's not so much that we spent so much money. I mean, the driveway did need to be done. It wasn't at the top of the list, but it wasn't at the bottom either. I guess the part that really bothers us is that we didn't sleep on it first. We just decided in a matter of minutes to spend a crazy amount of money. We were really pretty sick about it all weekend. We finally decided to get past it, but to never make such a big decision again without sleeping on it. Did we get ripped off? I don't know. Quite frankly, I don't want to know. We'll just move on from here.
In other news, I've been chipping away at the mortgage. We're down to about $150,700! I can't wait to be under $150k! I was hoping it would happen the first week of July, but now it doesn't look like that's going to happen. I'll have at least one more rent check coming in from my tenant, but I really feel it's best to put it in savings. Sooo... I should get under $150k in August instead. And to think that if I'd put all that driveway money towards the mortgage, I'd have it down to $136,000! Whoa! Hard to even comprehend. Well, like I said, I did something dumb. Oh well.
